In my Cisco Training courses I often get asked: Martin, which certifications should I do to progress my career? The times are long gone, that you easily could become an expert on all technologies (like when I started back in 1997). My personal take on the situation is as follows: R&S is almost a “take for granted” talent nowadays. Key is to have skills which are either in high demand or very niche. My prediction is that with all the financial problems the world is seing, Cyber Crime will be on the rise and hence the need for a lot of Security.

Please understand one thing. We love technology (I do at least), but Goldman Sachs doesn’t. They have 1 objective: making money and they need IT to support that objective. So Security is a must and all technologies which help companies saving money: Data Center consolidation, Virtualization, TelePresence all help saving costs (on hardware, travel, energy etc.). If I was to start my career today, I would go into Security but not limit it to Cisco alone -> CISSP, EC-Council etc. are all good and in demand. Stay away from mainstream technologies – too many guys are doing it. The amount of Consulting work I get for Cisco MARS, Juniper Netscreen, NAC, Ethical Hacking is second to none. I hope that helps.
